Hi, as a quick fix for Raffia i have used for some leaves from the reeds on my pond and slit them thinly lengthways with a craft knife so that the Pekins have some pliable material quickly to help with nest construction.

Good news, the Pekins have built a new nest low down in a fork of some Bamboo in the flight. It looks like they have used some of the slit reeds to form the frame for the nest as they had tried building in the same spot at the beginning of the season but all of the coconut fibre ended up on the floor. They have 3 eggs but i do not know when these are likely to hatch.

Just an update on the Pekins, sadly this round of eggs were infertile too. They have now had three rounds. The first they lost the chicks at around 1 week old and the last two have been clear eggs.
The cock bird appears a little under the weather and has a white discharge around his beak so i am treating them for Canker and hope this sorts him out.
Hopefully they try again in the next few weeks.

Shoot isn’t it how it goes with birds. Im in the same boat, mesia pair that was struggling last year and this year to lay eggs in a nest have pulled off a perfect nesting but eggs were clear. A pekin pair had 3 eggs that got tossed a week into it(so i tought) then second round found an egg a day on the floor just to find a chipmunk has gotten in and was taking the eggs.second pair of pekin with a3 week old baby went down again but the chick is in the nest with the female a lot so will see how it goes, cant remove it yet.
