Red Whiskered Bulbul chick was created by Mark Powis
Hi,
I have had a Red Whiskered chick fledge a couple of weeks ago and he is not perching as his legs are tucked under his belly instead of being straight. I thought that as his flight gets stronger and he begins to perch that the legs may begin to get stronger and gradually straighten but there has not really been any improvement so far so can any more experienced softbill keepers suggest how i can help him?
Thank you
Mark.

Splayed legs in bird chicks is not uncommon but from description this ??? seems more like a lack of motor function if the legs are in a natural position under the belly . . The 1st thing I'd do is check if the chick will allow the legs to be straitened , as that may well trigger a nervous response to allow natural movement , but other than that I'm not sure

Thanks for the reply Colin, the chicks left leg has steadily improved and he does perch using this leg but is unstable as the right leg is not straight and the foot does not yet grip. I'm not sure if there is anything i can do for him.

ah if the right leg is splayed that will not help , but with one leg OK it may just need a little more time as some birds can perch with just one leg but he might struggle in a breeding scenario
