Red Whiskered - eating their own eggs!! was created by Mark Powis
Hi,
Any suggestions please as i have a pair of Red Whiskered Bulbuls that bred well last year in a flight with Gouldians and other finches. This year they have nested and laid at least 4 times since March and the hen eats the egg each time. I have added liquid calcium to their water since March and they have access to ground egg shells that is in for the Gouldians although i do not expect the Bulbuls to eat this really.
This year i have also noticed them carrying small stones and tiny pieces of slate that they find in the aviary.
The only difference in this breeding season to last is that a pair of Pekins are now kept in the same flight. Both pairs have been kept together and bred successfully by their previous owner in a similar size set up to mine. Since March i have split the pairs up with the RW in side where their nest is and they still ate their egg.The Pekins have built two nests since March but no eggs.
All very frustrating and i would welcome any suggestions as to what to do?
Thanks
Mark.

Pekin robins are known to eat the eggs of other birds so i would keep a close eye on them.

Afraid Pekin Robins are well known for egg & even small chick eating i would house the Red whiskered bulbuls on there own.

Normally I would agree, but I have a young pair of pekins, 2019 bred by my self, & yet they are amongst 30 other softbills, ,they haven’t touched anyone’s eggs or chicks.

Not all Pekin robins do it.
For being one of the most common softbills imported they remain one of the most difficult to breed.
you either hit it lucky and get a pair that breed or they will not no matter what you feed them or house them.
My advice is if they dont attempt to breed by there 2nd year split the pair and try with a different mate.

Hi, over recent weeks i have split the RW and Pekins up and its definitely the hen RW eating her own eggs not the Pekins.
I wondered if this is a dietary thing or just behavioural as last year the RW bred happily in exactly the same conditions. The only difference this year is the Pekins have been added. The only other thing i have not tried but will this week it to take the Pekins out and house them out of site of the RW but they will not breed where i will have to house them short term.
