Red Whiskered Bulbuls - how many rounds? was created by Mark Powis
Hi,
I bought my first pair of RW in March this year and they went down to nest shortly afterwards:
Round 1 - 1 chick raised
Round 2 - 2 chicks raised
Round 3 - 2 chicks found dead on aviary floor at around a week old with a yellow/orange spot on their bellies?
Round 4 - 2 eggs disappeared after a few days
Round 5 - currently one chick being raised.
My query is when should i stop them breeding as i think this should be their last for this year even though only 3 rounds (hopefully) have resulted in fully fledged young? The hen has had 10 eggs over 5 rounds in total.
Thanks
Mark.

Hi Mark
I have never felt it necessary to limit the number of nests that a pair of birds produce.
My red-whiskered bulbuls began nesting at the beginning of April, with the following results:
Round 1 - 4 infertile eggs
Round 2 - 4 infertile eggs
Round 3 - 4 fertile eggs, 2 young reared
Round 4 - 4 fertile eggs, 4 young now at the point of fledging
So the hen has laid a total of 16 eggs, rearing 6 chicks (hopefully). The rearing of young takes more of a toll on hens than the laying of eggs and I don't expect that she will nest again this year.
I hope this is of interest to you.
Regards
Eric

Hi Eric,
Thanks for your reply. That is reassuring as i will leave them to it to see if they go down again or if they stop on their own.
