Pekins Query was created by Mark Powis
Hi,
My father has recently purchased a proven pair of Pekins and they have began nest building which shows promise. They are provided with calcium powder on their live food and also in the water twice a week but yesterday the hen appears to have laid an egg off the perch which did not have any signs of any shell with it? No soft shell unless they ate some of this before my father found the yolk?
Any tips or suggestions as usually soft shell/ lack of shell would indicate calcium?
Thanks
Mark.

Providing calcium alone will do no good if they have no access to vitamin D which is needed for the absobtion of calcium.Vitamin D can be given thru fish/ cod liver oil or birds can get it from sunshine. Now having said that this can also happen because the hen is not yet in full breeding condition, keep an eye on her in case there is trouble.

Hi Florin,
Thanks for the reply. I will check with my father if he is using daily essentials or something similar as that contains D3 i have forgotten about that piece of detail and also suggest he uses cod liver oil.

Hi Florin,
The hen has not yet laid another egg but the pair are mating regularly and she appears fine. She does get D3 in the calcivet provided. I have also ordered some live calci worms as they are not interested in frozen ones.
Regards
Mark.

If it was my bird i would assume she is not yet in breeding condition, even if the nest is built this does happen sometimes.
