Electric fence was created by florin c
Hi everybody,i have lost some pekins last fall due to a neighbors cat coming over at night and startled the birds then they flew into the side or front of the aviary and died. I was wondering if anybody uses and electric fence around the aviary and if it is possible to set one up for cats, coons and rats?

I use an electric fence on my aviaries, Stainless steel 7 strand on insulators around the bottom as long as it does not touch the ground it will work on anything that touches it as long as it is touching the ground when touching the wire, Earthed, Mice, Rats, Cats, Dogs, Foxes, Humans, its basically a pulse current running through the wire and anything touching it and touching the ground will get a shock.
for keeping things off the roof of your aviaries you need 2 wires kept apart i set mine at 6" apart 1 coming from the Energiser and 1 going to an earth pole min of 3ft in the ground in a moist spot if possible as you get a better earth than in dry ground, if you only have 1 wire from the Energiser anything touching it and not touching the ground will not get a shock hence the second wire to earth so when anything tries to climb up or over and touches both wires they get a shock, you dont need to run the live wire back to the unit just cut off where you want to stop, anything touching the live wire like plants will reduce the current so trim back anything growing close.
i have seen cats out accelerate a Porsche from a standing start off the roofs of my aviaries.
All you need is your wire, insulators, earth rod and Energiser/sender unit, i use a mains electric unit.
24hour protection. unless of course you have a power cut. but you can still do the same but using a battery energiser.

I have also run the wire around the perimeter of my garden so the wild birds can have some protection.
Any questions ?
